The Paper Bag Moccasins Craft

In history we have been studying explorers- Christopher Columbus, Daniel Boone, Francis Drake, ect.  We try to do a craft for each explorer to keep it interesting to the little kids while the older kids go more in depth. Yesterday we learned about the final explorers in our unit- Lewis and Clark, and their guide, Sacajawea.  Sacajawea was a Shoshone Indian, so we made brown paper (paper bag) moccasins.  It was super easy and fun, and everyone made theirs unique.  It was interesting that the boy's all looked the same while the girls all customized and decorated theirs.  I wonder if real Indians did that with their moccasins- was it a one-style for all or a make em' how you like them shoe?  The fun part was that they were actually very comfortable (to kids) and surprisingly durable.  Everyone had fun sliding over the carpet and tile floor- just don't go down the stairs because brown paper has very little traction.  Dad, who knew about Indians, could tell us what the different types of Indian's shoes looked like.  You can use the big brown paper bags from the grocer store although we had big sheets of brown paper.  I'll post picture-directions soon.
